If you need excessive force to push the piston through the ring compressor into the bore, it usually means the oil ring expander rails are overlapped. Rotate the engine on the engine stand. Coat the bearing in the rod cap end with assembly lube and install. Please tell us in the comments section below. Could someone please tell me what type of Piston Knocker Pat Topolinski uses to install pistons and who is the distributor of that tool?
Install your crankshaft first, a few inches of fuel hose on each rod bolt, to protect your crankshaft rod journals on your crankshaft and to guide your rod onto your crank. Gamblers are a different breed. The art of building racing and high performance engines involves often pushing engines near their limit. The tool expands the rings to increase their diameter so you can easily slip them on the piston.
You can also use the tool to remove the rings. Spread lube around the rings. Place the ring compressor on the piston. It is just a matter of loosening the tool to increase its diameter so it fits the piston.
Once the piston has gone into the compressor, tighten it until it presses the rings and makes a firm hold. Spread oil on the wall of the cylinder that will receive the piston. This will help to make the piston installation safe and easy. But most importantly, the lube prevents the initial piston stroke from happening on a dry piston and cylinder.
Install the piston bearing that is located on the big side of the piston rod. Lubricate it just like you did the other parts of the piston assembly. With the ring compressor tool still holding the piston, place the assembly on the cylinder block, ensuring the compressor fits the top diameter of the cylinder.
Then, use a dead blow hammer or the wooden part of a regular hammer to tap the piston gently. The aim is to drive it into the cylinder. Ensure the piston does not go too far down, or the connecting rod will scratch the crankshaft.
If the compressor was installed correctly, the piston should fit into the cylinder bore together with the rings. You can now loosen the compressor and push the piston further. Turn over the engine over to access the crankshaft. Use one end to rotate the crankshaft while the other guides the piston rod towards the crankshaft journals. If oversized valves are used, radial clearance must also be checked. Radial clearance of 1. Wait ten minutes before turning the engine after installing pushrods.
This wait allows tappets to bleed down and prevents bent pushrods or valves. View interactive image. Rotate the engine so both valves of the front cylinder are partially open. Shine a light through the exhaust port. Look through the spark plug hole to view the valves. If necessary, rotate to the point where the exhaust and intake valve heads cross both valves off their seats by an equal amount. See Figure 1. Wiseco found that the majority of V-twin owners wanted to not only increase the displacement of their engine, but also raise compression.
The Tracker series pistons accomplish both. Not only that, but we also offer a cubic inch piston option for the Harley-Davidson Twin Cam engine. That way you can beat your buddies at the stoplight. Whether you tell them you have a big-bore kit is up to you. Thanks to the Tracker piston, you have the choice between a flat top or a domed piston. The flat top piston has an 8. The domed piston is the higher performance offering, with a beefy ratio.
This option is for the rider who really wants to build a hot rod. Go big or go home! It takes the stock cc engine up to cc. Upsizing offers a nice increase in performance. The customer has the choice of stepping up to a slightly higher 9. The latter option is preferred in the burgeoning Flat Track series. Leather-clad warriors are hopping on the bandwagon, building Hooligan bikes, and pitching a cc engine sideways.
Trusted Wiseco quality, performance, and lowering costs to the consumer were the three focal points, and all three boxes were checked.
