I get the following error whether I try the full install or the patch. I'm sure I'm missing something simple I'll install this update manually but would like to solve the problem for future updates.

I am not sure what would cause that. In many cases, your host will make periodic site backups. DO NOT rely on these backups! You will need to navigate to the update component.
